MD Anderson to Brighten Market Street with Pink Lighting

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands will recognize breast cancer awareness month by lighting the Market Street square and lawn pink Thursday, October 14 from 6-10 p.m.

“As a community partner, we want to demonstrate our mission to eliminate cancer and to celebrate survivorship,” says Pamela Schlembach, M.D., associate professor of radiation oncology, who has been with the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in The Woodlands since it opened. “In honor of breast cancer awareness month we want to remind the community that early detection saves lives.”

At the pink lighting event, MD Anderson staff and volunteers will be on hand to pass out free educational materials and pink glow necklaces to spread the light of breast cancer awareness and hope.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. More than 182,000 new breast cancer cases in women are expected to occur in the United States this year, and about 2,000 new breast cancer cases are expected to occur in men in 2010. Early detection is an individual’s best chance with the breast cancer survival rate of 96 percent. Women should get annual mammograms and clinical breast exams at age 40 and older.
